Soul {filled}

As you already know, I spent the past weekend in Cochrane with one of my dearest friends. One of those friends who, despite the miles and the years and the changes, can speak to my soul and make me feel at home no matter where we are in the world or what life is throwing at us.

That friend is my Sku.

We’ve been friends since we were 13 years old, lived together, worked together, created nicknames and secret languages together. We share so much in common, yet we’ve never really fought. She’s my kindred, my common ground, even with our differences. And this past weekend, I was so blessed to have her shine more light into my life.

I decided to stay with my Sku because she lives close enough to the race course that it was a perfect excuse for extra visiting! The almost-4 hour travel time means grabbing these opportunities when I can!! But the weekend was so much more than just sleeping and running.

She taught me to jam :)

I’ve been musical for most of my life. I can play the piano, the saxophone, and the flute…although it’s been years for most of them. I’m sure I’d pass out if I tried to get through any song on the sax or flute…or my jaw would seize up! One of the things I admire most about my Sku is her voracious passion for music. She has learned almost everything under the sun: piano, percussion, drums (all kinds! not just drum kits!), violin, guitar, banjo…! She has written more songs than I can name, and has even placed in the Calgary Folk Music Festival songwriters’ competitions! She records her music, and she teaches as well. When she moved to her new home, I was in awe of her entire room dedicated to music.

It’s one of my biggest regrets: not continuing to practice music as an adult. The problem lies in my instruments of choice. While the piano is beautiful, it just isn’t functional for me. It takes up space and it isn’t portable. You just can’t take a piano camping! And each new piece of music takes time and effort to learn. The saxophone and flute? Well…they’re lovely in a group, but I have very little opportunity to meet with a jazz band to keep my skills from rusting. So, for awhile, I’ve wondered if I could ever learn to play the guitar.

Enter Sku.

After my race on Saturday, we went out to the gorgeous sprawling ranch home of one of her banjo classmates. I expected a dozen or so people, and some low-key plucking away at songs. Instead, I was met with over 60 people (easily), half of whom played some sort of instrument. There were a dozen fiddlers, at least 6 guitars, mandolins, ukeleles, autoharps, upright basses, and of course, banjos.

There was also this incredible 9-year old kid with spoons.

But what was more amazing than seeing  all of these musicians was hearing them. Sitting in a room no bigger than our kitchen/dining room, one person would call out a song, and everyone would pick up and play. Some would also sing. The energy of the live music surrounded me as the notes flowed through the air. I felt light-headed at times, listening to songs from the 1890′s all the way through to songs from my childhood. At one point, I had to fight back tears from the beauty of the music.

I felt alive.

So I summoned up my courage and asked my Sku to teach me. And she did! Sitting in her living room the next morning, she patiently walked me through my first guitar lesson. Within the half hour, my fingers and wrists were aching as she coached me through a disjointed, slow “Going to the Zoo”! The whole song! It was incredible!!

Even more incredible was when she offered to lend me one of her guitars so that I could keep practicing at home. And I have been! Each day, I take her guitar out of the case, tune it slowly, and begin to pluck away… G, G, D, G…strum, strum, strum. Pause, change, strum, pause, change, strum. Slowly learning to master a new art.

Something so simple, but made so much more beautiful at the hands of a beloved friend. These moments that might be so meaningless are made special because of that bond and that history. The lack of judgment is so refreshing in a world of drama. My soul is so full after this weekend.

I am so blessed to have a Sku in my life.

What gifts are filling your life today?

Mexico 2012

We’ve been home for almost a week, settling back in to this cold Alberta winter! After a week in paradise, it’s time to reminisce a little!

We left for Cancun on February 19. We had to be at the airport for 3:45am, so we scooped the bugz out of bed in warm footie pyjamas and set them in the car. They were all smiles and giggles, excited to finally be going to Mexico!! We got through customs quickly and changed them into their sundresses so we could get the party started :)

This was their first trip by plane. Not knowing how they would do, we did dose them with kids’ Gravol and Tylenol, and had our portable DVD players and LeapPads on hand. They did so well! They slept for a good chunk of the 4-hour flight to Houston, and we made our transfer with ease. They watched Lady and the Tramp on the way to Cancun, and we arrived just after 3pm!

My parents have a membership at the Palace resorts; they are a beautiful, luxurious chain that has ruined me for all other travel! We got settled in to our 2-bedroom Presidential Suite overlooking a gorgeous Caribbean Sea, with the kids’ pool just outside our building. After a few pink champagnes, and with flowers in our hair, we met up with my parents for dinner.

It was a long day, but the bugz couldn’t resist a night time swim on our first day in Mexico!!

We spent Monday getting acquainted with the resort, soaking up the sun and beverages, playing in the kids’ park and going for our complimentary manicure/pedicures at the spa.

We were up bright and early for a 6:45am (!!!!) swim on Tuesday. Leith went for his mani/pedi (no polish…lame!), and the bugz got sparkling glitter tattoos!

Tuesday was a day of adventure for us: Leith and I went parasailing at 400ft above the ocean! With a gulp and a prayer, we set off behind a boat in a sling-back chair and no seat belts, with our faith in the good Mexican safety standards – LOL! It was amazing, though – one of the top 5 experiences of my life, floating above the sparkling Carribean Sea. I expected it to be windy and bumpy, but it was peaceful, gentle and awe-inspiring. I’m so glad we went!!

We went to Isla Mujeres on Wednesday, which you can read about here!

Thursday was our day of spaaaah! One of the things I love about the Palace Resorts is their incredible spa experience. I had the best pregnancy massage at the Aventura Spa Palace on our honeymoon, and the hot stone massage at the Moon Palace was a thousand times more incredible. I actually fell asleep – a first for me! I was dizzy with relaxation as I left.

I was also able to experience the hydrotherapy, which I missed out on when I was pregnant. Hot tub, cold waterfalls, sauna/steam, Swedish shower, foot soak, all with cupfuls of hibiscus juice…I was nearly unconscious before I was even called in for my massage!

That afternoon, we kept our zen by painting a few ceramic souvenirs at a little hut by the pool:

On Friday, we made the most of a windy day by watching Poppa Rocky fly his super-cool kite on the terrace outside our room:

We splashed in the pool some more, and then went to have some family portraits taken. This was our first family photo shoot since the bugz have been around!! Long overdue… Another benefit to our membership? The photo shoot was included ;)

Leith and I spent Friday night at a romantic lobster-and-champagne dinner on a terrace overlooking the ocean. It was warm, peaceful and perfect – an excellent escape for two parents who never go on a date!

Saturday was a day of wrapping up loose ends. I went for my (included) back massage, and Leith painted a thank-you gift for my parents.

We trekked the entire length of the resort, and then went for a fancy-pants Mexican dinner to celebrate our last night in paradise:

We also coerced a waiter into performing a special dessert coffee treat for us:

<iframe width=”560″ height=”315″ src=”http://www.youtube.com/embed/dUvAtDExIKw&#8221; frameborder=”0″ allowfullscreen>

Sunday morning, we all woke up early to catch the sun rising over the edge of the sea. It was breath-taking, or as Kit-kat said: “More magical than true love’s kiss!!”

I love that kid!

After breakfast, it was time to say goodbye to Poppa and Grammy. We headed back to the airport for a looooooooooong day of travel back to the frozen north, with warm memories of our first real family holiday :)

February: a month in review

February 2012 single-handedly felt like the longest month in a long time! We booked our winter holiday back in August, so the last 3 weeks of our 6-month wait was torture :)

  • I tried to commit to a photo a day by participating in the February photo-a-day challenge. I didn’t finish it, but I’m ready for March!
  • I registered for the Footstock 2012 half marathon in June, and got up to 8km of continuous running!
  • I had lots of blood work done to find out why I’m so tired…nothing has come back, so I’ll just stick to napping ;)
  • We fell in love with Gracie, our cinnaminnie Chiweenie puppy. She fit right into our hearts
  • Leith spent the first part of the month on the road, but was home just in time to surprise us for Valentine’s day
  • We travelled to Cancun with my parents for a week and stayed in the Presidential suite of the resort. It was amazing
  • The bugz had their first airplane rides and did so well
  • I went parasailing!!
  • I actually ordered photo prints from our holiday – gasp!!
  • We visited my sister at her salon for a new cut/colour, and a hair cut for the bugz
  • Even though I haven’t posted in a few weeks, I kept counting my gifts for the 1000 Gifts challenge
  • We spent a lot of time with my parents while Leith was away
  • I made mozzarella cheese again!
  • We found a wonderful babysitter, and the bugz also spent a day at their old day home
  • Leith actually started our homemade wine kit that has been sitting downstairs for 14 months ;)

March is here, and we have lots of excitement written into our calendar! I have more blog posts about Mexico to write, and a photo-a-day challenge to complete. I can’t wait :)
